Ready for a hiking tour? Come on up, past the lo-o-o-ng retaining wall we installed for the homeowners...
...past another two walls which they are having fun turning into a garden area and gathering place...
...to the woodland paths.
Woods and steep slopes comprised the clients' yard; they were looking to maintain the property's integrity yet develop some usable space.
At the "trailhead" if you will, we placed a surprisingly comfy stone bench.
New-variety Light-O-Day Hydrangeas were planted by the stone bench to allow for full appreciation of the crisp, bright foliage.
Looking to the other side of the bench, you can see Dana's answer to the tough question, How do you transition from manufactured wall block to natural stone?
Like this! (Frog not included.)
Moving along and looking across the hillside, you can see how the walls and plant beds follow the contours of the hill, not fight them.
A close-up reveals a more private staircase.
Again, in the interest of working with the land, this "rain drain" is a great solution for unobtrusively carrying water away from the house foundation.
Let's journey on to the lower level that wraps around the side; as the sun filters through in the afternoon, you get a sense of timelessness...it's gorgeous.
The trails are undeniably inviting.
Wondering what the pockets of larger limestone rip-rap are all about? They are an experiment in keeping deer out of the plant beds; it has been said deer don't like to cross larger rock mulch such as this. We'll let you know.
Another staircase with crushed granite landings provides a classy way to go down below.
A zoom-in to see the beauty and function.
One final shot and the trail loops back...a woodland walk right out the front door.
