Where in the heck are we?
We are in a hospital LIGHTWELL. With hospital wings all around and being one floor below hospital grade, we were asked to convert blank space into a beautiful area for patients and staff to enjoy.
This was a first-time situation for us, and it took us a while to wrap our heads around how to go about a lightwell landscape.
The customer wanted a "northwoods" look, so that gave us a starting point.
Using understory plants found on the forest floor or at brush level, we tried to simulate a woodsy feel.
Everything had to be carried through the mechanical room, past large ductwork, or craned in from above. Dale, the job foreman, took it all in stride.
The pockets of plants--Sweetfern, Arctic Fire Dogwoods, Liriope among others--are doing well so far...
...and the physical therapy patients seem to like the distraction. (No, the large evergreens aren't real--they're from an interior plant specialist--but they look like it, don't they?)
Maidenhair Fern, Johnson's Blue Geranium, and Lady-in-Red Ferns are adapting just fine to the moderate climate.
The interesting part of this ongoing experiment will be to see what happens this winter--a large exhaust fan runs most of the time (seen in back corner in this picture).
The fan keeps the area pretty warm (and smelling like garlic toast...the fan circulates cafeteria food smells). We're not sure how that will jive with cold winter air aloft, so we shall see what spring brings.
