Can it be true?

While at our association’s trade show last week (the MNLA), I spied a Wisteria plant in bloom.  A new, improved variety.  Could it be true…will THIS be the wisteria to reliably perform in our area?  It has a name–Summer Cascade.  Doesn’t that sound lovely?  I’m hoping to get my hands on one to trial this summer.  Stay tuned!

Garden-Fresh

This can be the time of year to put your landscape to bed and forget about it, but maybe you don’t want to.  Maybe you’re feeling a little bit fresh yourself with the cooler temps and want to add color for the winter months.  Sure you’ve got evergreens in the plants beds and flowering crabs showing off their berries (lovely, by the way), but your impatiens have been frostbitten and your hanging baskets have been chucked for a few weeks now.  What’s a plant-lover to do?

Get a fresh start!  Get excited about WINTER container plantings!  Keep those unbreakable pots out and let your imagination run free.  Before garden centers close up, nab a few hardy evergreens and maybe a dogwood or two.  Scour the woods for interesting branches and pinecones.  Heck, make the kids come with!  Just look at these great ideas here and here.  Are they not awesome??  Among a few others, one of our suppliers has actual “recipes” for instant winter color and cheer.  And just think…this time of year, no coming home to crazy-thirsty plants!

Very Happy Holidays to you and yours.

Thank you, Indian Summer

Fall is usually a decent time to seed, so if you ask our opinion, we always say go for it.  The results are almost always good.

But this fall was particularly landscape-friendly; just look at these pictures of some mid-fall seeding we did on a soccer field and a pretty steep slope!  So cheerfully green only 3-4 weeks later.  No mud next spring for these customers, no sir.

For that we say thank you, wonderful Minnesota Indian Summer!

Green. for. Life! with Goodview Elementary

Talk about a great time!  The Minnesota Nursery and Landscape Association (MNLA) has initiated and Governor Dayton approved another statewide “Green for Life” day of service, this year’s being on September 22, 2011. This volunteer project’s purpose each year is to plant trees at over 100 schools across the state, and Winona Nursery participated by planting a tree at Goodview Elementary with Ms. Jacobson’s third grade class.  Not only was this special because the whole school came out to see the tree get planted, but also because the tree was dedicated to Mrs. Grant, a favorite and long-time custodian, who recently retired.

Goodview Elementary gave us three cheers, and we say, “Right backatcha!”  Thanks for letting us visit with you, and thanks to the students for all their help shoveling, fertilizing, mulching, and watering via Bucket Brigade!
